21 Terrifying Teen Drama Scenes

Teen dramas might be for teenagers, but sometimes they include some SERIOUSLY messed-up and scary stuff.

The CW

Who can forget when Stefan drowned over and over again FOR AN ENTIRE SUMMER on The Vampire Diaries??

In honor of ~spooky season~, we’ve decided to compile all of the creepiest teen drama moments!

First, when Aria was trapped in a box with a dead Garrett on Pretty Little Liars:

Aria turning over to see Garrett’s dead face was for sure the creepiest single moment on Pretty Little Liars. I’m also super claustrophobic, so Aria being trapped in a box was super freaky. Oh, and she was also ABOUT TO BE THROWN OFF A MOVING TRAIN!!

When the Liars were tortured in replicas of their rooms in a life-size underground dollhouse on Pretty Little Liars:

This was the most messed-up thing “A” ever did, and honestly, probably the most messed-up thing to ever happen on a teen drama. The torture was so psychological, and I couldn’t believe anyone could be so twisted as to come up with this.

When Nanny Carrie chased Jamie through the cornfields on One Tree Hill:

The CW

When Haley grabbed Jamie (but we thought it was Carrie), I almost screamed. Carrie was a terrifyingly unhinged villain, and the thought of anyone hurting Jamie was too much to bear. Also, cornfields are always terrifying.

When Derek attacked Peyton on One Tree Hill:

The CW

The music cues and acting in this scene were just so terrifying. Derek was honestly the creepiest villain on One Tree Hill, and this scene struck fear into my poor teenage heart that has never gone away. NEVER TRUST SOMEONE WHO SAYS HE’S YOUR LONG-LOST BROTHER!

When Freddie was beaten to death with a baseball bat by Effy’s psychiatrist on Skins:

I will maintain to this day that this is the most horribly unnecessary thing to ever happen on Skins, a show known for its gritty realism. Freddie was such a pure soul, and the fact that he was brutally beaten to death by a mad psychiatrist was just too horrible to bear. The moment had no sound or music as the screen zoomed out, and it sent chills down my spine.

When Katherine was literally dragged to hell on The Vampire Diaries:

The CW

The Vampire Diaries was a super-dark show, but this took the cake and left me with my mouth wide open, staring at the TV. We didn’t even know there was something beyond the Other Side for supernatural creatures, so watching Katherine get dragged to hell was so creepy and unexpected, especially as Bonnie watched on.

When Betty was forced to bury Archie in a coffin on Riverdale:

The CW

Being buried alive is one of my worst fears, so this scene really got me. It was so dark and horrifying, even for Riverdale, and flashing back and forth between Betty being held at gunpoint and dirt falling through the coffin onto Archie’s face made it even worse.

When Betty was drugged by Edgar as he planned to cut her organs out on Riverdale:

The CW

The bloody handprints on Edgar’s apron, the restraints, the dimly lit operation room, the mask forced on Betty’s face, the implication that she was about to be CUT OPEN…this scene was utterly terrifying.

When Alyssa was attacked and then James killed the man on The End of the F***ing World:

I guess I should’ve expected this from a show where the premise is a boy who thinks he’s a serial killer. This scene was terrifying even before James stepped in, and I was honestly happy he killed the guy — but it was so bloody and horrifying that it completely set a new tone only three episodes in.

When Angel murdered a man and painted “WAS IT GOOD FOR YOU TOO?” with his blood on the wall on Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

The WB

I know Angel did a LOT of messed-up stuff as Angelus, but this is the one that chilled me to my bones. Writing something in blood is always creepy, but the way Angel did this just to send a message to Buffy about them having sex was so twisted and horrifying that it stuck with me.

When the Gentlemen took away everyone’s speech on the silent episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

The WB

No show will ever top this. For a show that’s got elements of horror but is usually campy, this was terrifying. I can’t imagine having my heart cut out while I can’t even scream.

When Bryce’s ghost randomly popped up to torment Jessica and then got eaten by bugs on 13 Reasons Why:

Season 4 went full Pretty Little Liars, and the camping episode is probably the absolute freakiest. Can Jessica, like, breathe for five minutes?! This image of Bryce was horrifying on so many levels.

When hallucinations of Monty tormented Clay on 13 Reasons Why:

When Lilly’s ghost haunted Duncan on Veronica Mars:

Lilly’s ghost was especially freaky because she appeared still covered in blood from the head wound that killed her. Yeah, it was kind of cheesy, but it still totally freaks me out, especially with the weird green lighting they used.

When Polo realized he’d killed Marina and let out this blood-curdling scream on Elite:

I don’t know what it is exactly, but something about this moment scares me way more than the actual murder scene. I think it’s because you can really feel Polo lose control, and his scream is just so chilling.

When Emma watched helplessly as Will was brutally murdered on Sceam:

I was not a Will-and-Emma shipper, but this was HORRIFYING. Imagine having to watch your boyfriend get chopped alive?! Honestly, we don’t give this show enough credit for its scares.

When Eli had vivid nightmares after finding Cam’s body on Degrassi: The Next Generation:

TBH, I still can’t tell if this was supposed to be blood or paint, but either way, it was super disturbing. The episodes following Cam’s death are some of the series’ darkest.

When Winston dressed in this freaky costume and held Zoë hostage as the school burned down on Degrassi: The Next Generation:

Degrassi had some pretty wild moments, but I think this scene truly takes the cake. This whole plot was SO weird and messed up. The fact that Winston and Zoë dated after this?! WTF.

When Oliver held Marissa hostage on The O.C.:

This scene was so chilling and intense. Oliver obviously needed serious help, but man, I was scared for Marissa. Hearing her cry out for help as he waved the gun in the air and shushed her was enough to give me nightmares for years.

When Sabrina had a vision of hanging witches by the apple tree on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:

There are SO many creepy scenes in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but the imagery in this scene was honestly the creepiest of the show for me. Right from the pilot, they redefined what was normal to show on a teen drama.

And finally, when Dr. Valack literally drilled into Lydia’s skull on Teen Wolf:

The whole Eichen House plotline was SO SCARY, and honestly, I don’t know how Lydia ever got back to normal after this. It was so horrifying and traumatizing, even just to watch.
